Region: Styrian Iron Trail

The Upper Styrian region around the Erzberg in the city of Eisenerz has been characterized for centuries by the mining and processing of iron ore. At the peak around 1950, up to 5000 miners were working at the largest iron ore mining in Central Europe. Today there are still about 200 workers.
Apart from the mining itself, it had a great industrial impact to the whole region. Steel industry has been the major source of income for centuries, nowadays the VOEST ALPINE company is producing high class steel (e.g. the longest rail of the world, which is 120 meters long).

The Styrian Iron Trail, which has been developed as a tourist adventure road since 1986 comprising 18 municipalities, promises an exciting journey through the past and present of ore mining and smelting over a length of around 100 kilometres. Countless historical sites and several museums bear witness to the region's centuries-old mining, metallurgical and industrial history.

The region is proud of its mining and industrial heritage, and there is the strong will to take further advantage of these potentials. A visit to the museums makes the history of the Styrian Iron Road come alive and tangible.
